Visual Artist Ross Coulter (State Library of Victoria, NGV) turns the spotlight on Clayton's caregivers in this collaboration between 2021 Clayton Festival online and Monash Gallery of Art.
For Caregivers, Coulter embarked on a journey to photograph more than 30 caregivers over several weeks, engaging with parents, grandparents and carers in Clayton’s busy Community Centre.
Through his painstaking work, Coulter seeks to highlight everyday people and reveal the faces of those providing invaluable yet hidden labour, who are rarely acknowledged by mainstream contemporary society.
The giant portraits of those who self-identify as being givers of care form a photographic mural displayed in the heart of Clayton.
You can see digital stories related to Caregivers hosted on the Monash Council website, along with a curatorial response to the works by the gallery, all of the images, and a blog by Monash Council youth ambassador Lizzy Kuoth, who was also photographed for the project.
