Noon Beecher Kelk - It’s so nice to have you all here with me

Arts Access Victoria presents The Museum of Us

Noon is a small time meme lord at Avant-Garde Memes and full-time philosopher (i.e.unemployed).

A digital collage based on an image from the TV show ‘The Simpsons’, with the faces of popular media figures roughly photoshopped over characters’ faces. The worried, dismayed image of Homer Simpson (wearing a green t-shirt and white and red trainers) is being held in place by characters with the faces of Donald Trump and Slavoj Žižek. It is labelled ‘me’, and its bom is being kicked by a leg labelled ‘severe mental illness’.

About the artist

Noon is a small-time memelord at Avant-Garde Memes and a full-time philosopher (i.e. unemployed).

He hosts Auspol Snackpod , a weekly podcast about Australian news, politics, and memes.

Noon is severely depressed and pessimistic about the future, and tries to find comfort and meaning in his dog Bagel, reading political theory, therapy, gardening, and playing games… but as a back-up plan, he's stashing away supplies for the coming apocalypse.

Severe mental illness dot jpeg

A digital collage based on an image from the TVshow ‘The Simpsons’, with the faces of popular media figures roughly photoshopped over characters’ faces.

The worried, dismayed image of Homer Simpson (wearing a green t-shirt and white and red trainers) is being held in place by characters with the faces of Donald Trump and SlavojŽižek. It is labelled ‘me’, and its bum is being kicked by a leg labelled ‘severe mental illness’. The leg's owner has ‘my subconscious’ written across his chest and an image of the coronavirus over his face, labelled ‘2020’.

In the background, the faces of Scott Morrison and Virginia Trioli, and the Spotify logo, are superimposed over other bystanders’ faces.

Zoom (my room)

A digital collage shows the back of the Star Wars character Darth Maul’s head protruding from a grey striped suit, facing into a Zoom meeting on a computer, in a messy bedroom with piles of clothing visible in the background.

In the foreground, the text reads ‘it’s so nice to have you all here with me’.

Symptoms (telehealth)

A digital collage of several images arranged in an irregular grid, with a cartoon blonde-haired boy looking exasperated, the tearful crying face of Batman, fattened, sad-looking Pusheen cat, a brown-skinned man opening his mouth which is full of sandy looking material, a miserable looking pug laying on the floor, and a small black-haired girl on a swing in the sky.

There is also a chart with the words ‘anxiety & depression’ visible, comparing vastly increased incidence of anxiety and depressive disorders between January-June 2019 and May 2020.

At the bottom, the silhouette of a therapist and patient (hands raised on a couch) with the words ‘it’s so nice to have you all here with me’.

Community (isolation)

A digital collage shows comedian Jerry Seinfeld appearing behind a wooden pulpit bearing the words ‘Preach the word’, which has been placed in front of a modern church interior.

Seinfeld’s hands are raised and his face bears a smile. The Audible logo has been placed at the centre of the image, along its top.

The text along the bottom reads ‘it’s so nice to have you all here with me’.

Symptoms (jouissance)

A digital collage of many insects or fearful looking creatures –a centipede, a snake, mantis, cicada, locust, two wasps, a spider and a beetle –arranged around the seated figure of Morpheus from the Matrix films.

Morpheus is seated on a faded red leather armchair, wearing a snakeskin-textured coat and purple trousers, and armless sunglasses.

His arms rest on the arms of the chair and beside it, a small side table with a black old-fashioned landline telephone.

The text at the bottom reads ‘it’s so nice to have you all here with me’.
