Looking for some fun ways to spruce up your home for Christmas and keep the kids entertained?

City of Greater Geelong presents Christmas at Home

Continue the Christmas joy at home and enjoy some old-fashioned Christmas baking, make decorations, colour in our Christmas carol song sheets and more.

Making your own Christmas decorations with household items is a great place to start – and one that’s easy on the wallet and better for the planet.

The City of Greater Geelong has picked five craft ideas to make at home:

Egg carton reindeer

Make use of your old egg cartons and create your very own mini Rudolf! All you’ll need is an egg carton, paper, brown paint, googly eyes and a red pom pom for the nose. If you don’t have the googly eyes or pom pom, replace these with paint or paper.   Read the tutorial and get started.

Alternative Christmas tree

Get creative this Christmas and make your own alternative tree! There are many  ideas to get you inspired  ranging from wall art and carefully arranged books through to fallen branches.

Old light globe ornament

Got some old light globes around the house? Spruce up your old globes with some glue, string, sparkles, paint and diamantes. There are many clever and creative ways to  transform old light globes into beautiful decorations for your Christmas tree. Please note: This craft idea will need a bit of adult supervision.

Birdseed ornament

A treat for the birds in your neighbourhood and fun for the whole family, this  Christmas ornament  is one that serves a few purposes. Using a few household pantry items, a cookie stencil and bird seed, it’s a relatively quick and easy activity.

Nature craft

Head outdoors and forage for twigs, pinecones and fallen leafy branches to make some Christmas ornaments that bring the outdoors in. With the right size twigs, you can easily  make a star to hang on the Christmas tree, or by slicing and drying pieces of orange you can create a  citrus-scented garland  for your home. There are many more craft ideas using  natural materials  online.
