Elyjah McLeod:

So my name is Elyjah McLeod and I’m part of the Lake Bolac Eel Festival.

We’ve just completed the amazing project Djabwurrung River Time and we’ve just trailed along the Hopkins River and spent the night camping here and writing songs at this fire right here.

The kids have all really had a fantastic time.

We’re obviously really committed at the Eel Festival to create opportunities for young people to engage in country, learn about the beautiful environment in which they live in, learn more about the cultural heritage and history in the area around here as well so this has just been one great project that we’ve enjoyed putting together and the I think the words from the young people speak for themselves.

Song lyrics:

I woke up excited

The river was calling me

In the cold foggy weather

Searching for the sacred tree

My friends are beside me feeling the gentle breeze

Saw that old homestead where our ancestors once had been

Connected to Mother Earth is the place where I want to be

Then the river whispered, was my ancestors calling me

Kuuyang waters flowing gently out to sea

For many long years eels sing their ancient song

On their timeless journey back to where they belong.

Sitting by the firelight

Hear the elders in the wind

Making the memories

Sharing stories with our friends

Connected to Mother Earth is the place where I want to be

Then the river whispered, was my ancestors calling me

Kuuyang waters flowing gently out to sea

For many long years eels sing their ancient song

On their timeless journey back to where they belong.
